Description
This is a barn with a grain or fodder store above a shippon, located approximately 20 meters northwest of Carminowe Farmhouse. It was built around 1860 and is constructed from shale rubble with dressed granite quoins, steps, jambstones, and lintels. The roof is hipped and covered with grouted scantle slate. The barn has a long rectangular shape and features two entrances on the front (east) side that face the yard, along with two pairs of opposing winnowing doors on the first floor. There are flights of steps at both the front left and rear right. While there is no external horse engine house, it is possible that it is integrated internally, or a steam-driven thresher may have been used.
The east front is fairly regular, with a window and a doorway on the left, and another doorway and window on the right at the first floor, separated by a wide section of blind walling. There are pigeon holes under the eaves. The left-hand doorway is accessed by a flight of steps from the left, which has a store underneath. The ground floor doorways are located to the right of the steps and at the far right. There are window openings to the left of the steps and to the right of the first doorway, as well as a slit ventilator under the right-hand first floor doorway. The original or old ledged doors and windows have random glazing with vertical glazing bars or feature shutters or half shutters.
The interior has not been inspected. Carminowe has been an important manor since the 13th century and is part of a planned group of nearly complete farm buildings, with this barn being second in importance only to the farmhouse itself, contributing to the overall 19th-century agricultural economy.
