Description
Brendon Farmhouse is a farmhouse built in the early 19th century, with a late 17th or early 18th century range extending at the rear right. The main structure is made of slatestone and freestone rubble, topped with slate roofs, while the earlier range is constructed of cob and also has a slate roof. The main range is double depth and features a double span roof with brick gable end stacks, possibly representing a remodelling of a 17th century single depth plan that included service rooms in a rear outshut. There is a rear brick stack at the eaves.
The farmhouse is two stories high and has a symmetrical front with three windows facing southeast. The ground floor windows have been renewed and consist of three-light timber casements with glazing bars, featuring eight panes per light and granite lintels. The central doorway has a 19th century panelled door and a thin rectangular fanlight. The first floor windows have also been renewed and are two-light timber casements with glazing bars, again with eight panes per light.
Inside, there is a large fireplace on the left side of the ground floor, which has been renewed after a fire, and a brick-floored dairy at the rear. The rear right range, which was formerly a cottage, has been used partly for storage and features a truncated gable end stack, a large fireplace, a fireplace beam, and a partial floor.
Adjacent to the rear of the main range is a circa early 19th century cartshed, supported by granite monolith uprights and open at the front. This cartshed creates a rear courtyard alongside the former cottage and the main range. A slatestone rubble wall with a wide rectangular entrance, featuring granite jambs and a lintel, connects the cartshed to the rear of the house, completing the rear courtyard. The cartshed and wall are included for their group value.
