Description
This building is a barn with a horse engine house and a water wheel, likely built in the mid-19th century, around the same time as the estate farmhouse constructed for E. Coode in 1854. It is made of stone rubble and features rag slate roofs with hipped ends. The barn is arranged in an overall 'L' shape, with shippons on the ground floor and a threshing floor, hay loft, and granary above.
A notable aspect of this barn is the presence of a horse engine house and a water wheel that were used to power the threshing machinery. The horse engine house is located at the rear of the west range, while the water wheel is situated in a pit approximately 30 metres to the east of the barn. The water wheel, which is 20 feet in diameter, is an overshot type and has a slate launder. It is possible that the horse engine house provided an alternative power source during dry weather when the mill pond, fed by surface water from the surrounding fields, might not have sufficient water.
On the exterior, the barn stands two storeys high, with shippon doors on the ground floor and at least three loft doors above, each with slate hoods. There is also a line of pigeon holes. The horse engine house has a rectangular projection at the rear of the western range, featuring long ventilation slits. Inside, the barn contains 19th-century floor joists, and some machinery remains in the horse engine house, although it was obscured by bales of hay during the last inspection in 1987.
