Description
The memorial to Jonathan Couch is located in the burial ground 30 meters to the west of Chy Chapel in Lansallos. Erected in 1870, this churchyard memorial honors Jonathan Couch, a notable Cornish naturalist, doctor, apothecary, classical scholar, zoologist, botanist, ichthyologist, and archaeologist, who passed away in 1870, and his wife, Jane Quiller, who died in 1857. The memorial is a granite obelisk set on a tall plinth featuring a moulded cornice and a square base. Jonathan Couch, born in 1789, made significant contributions to scientific knowledge in the 19th century, publishing works such as "Cornish Fauna" in 1838, "The History of the Fishes of the British Isles" in four volumes from 1862 to 1865, and "A Calendar of Natural History Observed at Polperro" in 1842. In 1871, his son, Thomas Quiller Couch, published his father's notes on "The History of Polperro."
