Description
Carneggan Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely has origins from the 17th century and was remodeled around the 1760s. It is constructed from rubble stone, with part of the rear slate hung. The roof is slate, coated with bitumen, hipped on the left side and gable-ended on the right. There is a half hip to the rear projecting wing, and the lower kitchen wing on the right has a gable end with a catslide roof at the back.
The main range has an adjoining wing on the right, and two rear wings create an asymmetrical 'U' shaped plan, with a staircase wing on the southwest and a shorter projecting wing on the southeast. The building is two storeys with an attic and features a regular four-window front with crown glass. The ground floor has three 12-pane sashes without horns, and there is a gable-ended rendered porch to the left of the center. The first floor has four 12-pane sashes without horns and a dentilled cornice, along with two small full hipped dormers, each containing 2-light casements.
The kitchen wing, which is set back to the right, is also two storeys. Its ground floor features a 2-light casement with glazing bars and a fixed light above, along with a partly glazed door to the right. Above, there is a tripartite window with glazing bars. The left-hand end of the building is partly slate hung and includes a mid-20th century canted bay window, also slate hung.
Inside, the main staircase has an open string with a Chinese Chippendale balustrade and handrails that are ramped at the corners. In the attic, there is a reused 17th-century oak screen with ovolo moulded muntins, a top rail, and moulded horizontal rails. The roof timbers of the rear projecting wing feature cambered chamfered collars, slightly trenched purlins, and notches on the principals that continue into the side of the wall plate. There are two doors on the ground and first floors with vertical panels, moulded rails, and ornate strap hinges. The ceiling beams in the kitchen wing are chamfered with ogee stops.
