Description

The former cottages, now used as a shippon and store, are located approximately 70 metres northeast of Penrose Farmhouse. This terrace of cottages dates back to the 17th century and was remodeled in the 18th and 20th centuries. The structure features granite rubble walls with granite dressings and has grouted scantle slate roofs, except for the left-hand end where it has been replaced with corrugated asbestos. The building has a long rectangular cranked-on-plan layout and was likely originally composed of three or four small houses or a lodging house for servants of the main farmhouse. It is partly built into the bank at the rear.

The exterior is primarily a two-storey range. The east front displays seven small chamfered window openings from the 17th century, with one blocked, along with four larger 17th-century window openings on the ground floor and two original 17th-century doorways. Other openings date from the 18th century or later, although some 17th-century dressed masonry has been reused. To the left, there is a single-storey section that shares the same eaves level, featuring two 17th-century window openings and a later leant-to at the far left. The rear of the building includes two complete 17th-century window openings at either end, along with some 18th-century openings and 19th-century doorways.

Inside, the right-hand end remains largely unaltered since it was last occupied around 1900. It retains its original chamfered fireplace lintel supported by 18th-century jambs, with a complete oven behind the left-hand jamb. The floors and roof structure date from the 19th century. This building is a rare example of a 17th-century type in Cornwall and preserves many of its original features.
