Description

No. 1 Penally Court (Venn Cottage) and No. 2 Penally Court are a pair of cottages dating to circa 1840, located in Forraby and Minster, Boscastle. They are constructed from painted and rendered slate-stone rubble, with a rag slate roof and hipped end on the right. Rendered brick axial stacks heat the left-hand room and the right-hand room, respectively; the stack backing onto the passage or stairs. The cottages have a two-room plan with an entrance to the left of centre, and the left room has a stack in the left-hand end wall and the right room has a stack backing onto the right side of the passage or stairs.

The cottages have a regular two-window facade. Granite 2-centred arched openings are present on both the ground and first floors. A circa 19th-century window with intersecting glazing bars is on the left. The entrance to the left of centre has 20th-century glazed double doors and the window to the right has been replaced with a 20th-century glazed door. First floor windows consist of two circa 19th-century casement windows with intersecting glazing bars. The interior was not inspected.

These cottages were originally built for the head gardener and groom of Penally House. The remaining five cottages within the terrace were originally stables, converted into dwellings in 1936. The ground falls to the rear of the cottages.
