Description
The garden walls located approximately 120 meters west of Tullimaar date from the early 19th century and were likely constructed for Benjamin Sampson, who managed a local powder factory. They are made of shale rubble and feature shallow dressed stone arches, with scantle slate gable coping and clay ridge tiles. The walls form two roughly rectangular enclosures, with the southern area connected at its northeast corner to the northern area, which has a rectangular building attached at its southeast corner. The walls are built on a south-facing slope, with doorways that still have their original panelled doors. The walling is bedded horizontally, while the coping follows the slope of the land. As of the last survey in 1985, the gardens were overgrown, but the walling remained largely intact. This garden feature is associated with Tullimaar, a well-crafted house built around 1828.
