Description

The bridge at SW 778 386 NE is a road bridge built around 1828, located over the entrance to a dock or unloading bay. It is constructed from shale rubble with dressed granite voussoirs, a string course, and parapet coping. The bridge features a single span with a segmental, almost semi-circular arch, and has a slightly humped road surface along with parapets topped with hogsback copings. This bridge was built to facilitate the transport of limestone from small boats and barges to the nearby lime kilns. The Turnpike road from Truro to Falmouth was established in 1828, which likely marks the date of the bridge's construction. Information regarding the bridge comes from a map by M.W. Jarvis, MBE, AMICE, created in 1974, as referenced in THE NORWAY HOTEL, PERRANWHARF.
