Description

The Avery monument is located in the churchyard about 5 metres south of the south aisle of the Church of St Sampson in Golant. This 18th-century headstone is made of slate and features a square shape with an incised border of entwined tendrils and leaves. The inscription includes a variety of scripts, notably a primitive Gothic script with a border for the name of John Avery. It is stylistically similar to the monuments of Mary Miechel and William Rundall. The monument commemorates Ann Avery, who died in 1774, and her husband John, who passed away in 1778.
