Description
Orchard Cottage is an early 19th-century house, with additions made in the later 19th century and the 20th century. It is constructed of painted slatestone rubble with slurried slate roofing, gable ends, and ridge tiles. Painted brick gable end stacks are present. The roof of the later 19th-century addition to the left is covered with asbestos slate. The original plan comprised two principal front rooms of equal size, with a central entrance to a stair hall. An outshut was originally integrated at the rear, providing a kitchen space heated by a rear stack, which has since been removed. A 20th-century staircase has replaced the original within the outshut. A one-room, two-storey addition was built in the later 19th century to the left, and a single-story addition was added in the 20th century to the right side. The front of the house presents a symmetrical three-window facade with 19th-century four-pane sash windows with horns. The central door is a six-panelled design, sheltered by a pitched asbestos slate hood. The later 19th-century addition to the left is at a lower roof level and features a 20th-century window and door on the ground floor, and a 20th-century window above. The 20th-century addition on the right side has a window and a garage entrance. The rear outshut incorporates a two-light casement window at first floor and another two-light casement to the rear on the ground floor. The interior has been significantly altered in the 20th century.
