Description
Wesley Chapel, which includes walls, gate piers, gates, and railings at the road frontage, is a Wesleyan chapel and adjoining schoolroom built in 1814. The building has stuccoed elevations and a dry Delabole slate roof with a pedimented gable at the entrance front. It has an overall L-shaped plan that includes a later schoolroom. The chapel itself features a rectangular aisle-less layout with a gallery on all four sides. The entrance and stair hall are located at the east end, while the rostrum is at the west (ritual east) end. A large schoolroom adjoins the west end, which includes a heated wing extending at right angles to its north side.
The exterior has two storeys with a symmetrical four-window east entrance front. There are two wide elliptically arched doorways on the left and right, each with original three flush-beaded panelled doors and elliptical fanlights. In front of the doorways is a tetrastyle prostyle Tuscan porch with a moulded entablature. The corners of the front are accentuated with square column-like projections. The first-floor windows, likely added around 1900, feature arched lights and coloured glass in the spandrels. Moulded hoods on consoles are present over the windows, and the pediment and flanking 'columns' have moulded cornices. The side walls retain their original 16-pane hornless sash windows, with four windows on each side across two floors. The schoolroom has a three-window front facing the road and a symmetrical two-window gable-ended front on the opposite wall, which includes a central doorway and two round-headed windows with coloured glass.
Inside, the chapel retains all its fittings and features from around the 1860s, including a cantilevered gallery supported by paired brackets over Tuscan columns, box pews, and a bow-fronted rostrum.
