Description
The Old Forge is a blacksmith's house dating from around the mid-19th century. It is constructed of granite rubble with granite dressings and features a grouted slate half-hipped roof with 20th-century brick chimneys on the side walls. The building has a double depth plan, consisting of two front rooms on either side of a central passage landing that leads to a large rear entrance hall and staircase. The left-hand room is wider and likely served as the original kitchen/living room, with a back kitchen behind it, while the right-hand room probably functioned as the original rear porch.
The exterior is two storeys high and presents a nearly symmetrical three-window east front, with a doorway positioned centrally among the windows. The door may be original, though the top panels have been replaced with a pane of glass. The windows are mostly late 19th or 20th-century six-pane horned sashes. The rear of the building remains unspoiled and features a gable-ended stone porch to the right of the middle, with an original six-panel door. The first-floor openings likely have original six-pane hornless sashes, while the ground floor right has a horned copy, and the rest are 20th-century windows in the original openings. The ground floor openings are topped with granite lintels, while the first-floor openings have segmental brick arches. Inside, where inspected, the property retains original carpentry and joinery, including a dog-leg stair with stick balusters and turned newels.
