Description

Penally Terrace is a group of fish cellars, dating to the late 18th or early 19th century, that have been converted into a terrace of houses. The buildings are located in Forrabury and overlook Boscastle Harbour.

The structure is built of rendered and painted stone rubble, with a rear range partly constructed of slate and asbestos slate above a ground floor. The roofs are covered with bitumen coated rag slate and asbestos slate, featuring hipped ends. The ranges extend around three sides of an open courtyard, enclosed by a curtain wall with an entrance on the fourth, or right-hand, side.

Originally, the front range was of one room depth, likely with open sheds on the ground floor and net lofts above. In the mid-19th century, it was extended and remodelled into a range of five cottages with double-depth plans; four of the cottages have central cross passages. A range on the left was possibly used as offices or as the harbour master's house. The rear range incorporates lofts raised above the ground floor, supported by stone rubble piers, which were reinforced in the late 20th century with concrete piers.

The front, two-storey range overlooks the harbour. The overall elevation presents a 13-window range. Four cottages on the right have symmetrical three-window fronts, featuring 12-pane sashes and casements, and four-panel doors. The cottage on the left has a single window front. The rear range has slate hanging above the ground floor. A line of brick niches for pressing poles is visible along the rear wall.

The interior of the front range cottages features mid-19th century interiors.
