Description
Masonic Hall is a building constructed in 1872, designed by John Paul. It features a polychrome front made of faced rubble and freestone, with granite and terracotta details. The roof is made of dry Delabole slate and has a stone stack with brick quoins and a moulded cornice on the right. The building is designed in the Venetian Gothic style and has a deep plan. It is two storeys high and has a four-window range.
The first-floor windows are stilted round-headed with coloured glass, and there are nook shafts, slender hoodmoulds, and keyblocks. Two medallion heads are located in the outer spandrels, and there is a datestone in the central spandrel. The eaves entablature features lozenges and consoles. The ground floor has segmental-arched openings, including a doorway with nook shafts and an open pediment adorned with Masonic symbols. The doorway has a six-panel door with three arched top panels, and there are two windows to the right with four-pane horned sashes and tall keyblocks through slender hoodmoulds. The mid-floor has an arcaded and moulded frieze. The interior of the ground floor was altered in the 20th century. This building is a fine and richly detailed example, clearly influenced by the work of John Ruskin.
