Description
A pair of attached houses, likely dating from the late 18th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century and some 20th-century changes. The houses are built of slatestone rubble with granite quoins. They have hipped scantle slate roofs covered in a slurry, with ridge tiles, and side stacks featuring brick shafts with cornices. Each house has a two-room plan, with one room to the front and one to the rear, and a shared central entrance. Shell Cottage is on the left, and Old Hill Cottage is on the right. Behind Old Hill Cottage is a single-storey outshut, likely dating from the 19th century, with a raised upper storey added in the 20th century.
The front of the houses is symmetrical, with four windows across. The first floor has four 19th-century 16-pane sashes with concrete lintels. The ground floor has a 19th-century four-panelled door with glazed panels to Shell Cottage, alongside a 19th-century 16-pane sash window. Old Hill Cottage has a 20th-century glazed door and a similar 16-pane sash window. The rear of Shell Cottage has a half-glazed 20th-century door, a 2-light casement window to the left, and a 3-pane light window. The rear outshut has an asbestos slate roof.
The interior has not been inspected, but Shell Cottage retains 2-panelled shutters to the ground floor window, and both houses may retain other 18th-century features, such as panelled doors.
