Description
The Thatched Cottage is a house, likely dating from the late 17th or early 18th century, with additions from the early to mid-19th century and 20th-century alterations. It is constructed of stone rubble and cob, with some rendered and painted areas. The roof is thatched with gable ends, and a hipped roof to the left addition. There is a gable end stack to the right and an axial stack to the left (originally at the left gable end), with brick shafts. A small, single-story wash house is attached to the rear right, with a slurried slate roof. The original plan was a 2-room configuration with a central through passage and a fireplace in each room. In the early to mid-19th century, a stable was added to the left end, now incorporated into the house, and a straight staircase was inserted within the passage. The front has a symmetrical, two-window appearance. The ground floor has a central plank door set within a 20th-century porch with a pitched roof. There are 2-light casements to the right and left at ground and first floor, likely of the early 20th century, with L hinges. A straight masonry joint marks the division to the left, where the stable is attached, with 2-light 20th-century casements above and below. The right end is rendered, with a small single-light window at ground floor. Internally, the room to the left on the ground floor has roughly hewn, chamfered spine beams with run-out stops. The room to the right has chamfered beams. The fireplace in the room to the right is blocked, while the fireplace in the room to the left has been rebuilt in the 20th century. The roof features roughly hewn principal rafters, halved and pegged, with purlins resting on their backs. The rear elevation has one 2-light casement at first floor, and a 2-light 4-pane casement and a central plank door with a 20th-century hood to the ground floor on the left. The wash house has a pitched roof and a 2-light casement.
