Well Farmhouse And Adjoining Shippon To East

Well Farmhouse and the adjoining shippon to the east is a farmhouse dating from around the 16th century, with alterations made in the late 17th century, as indicated by a concealed datestone from 1669. The building was restored in 1982. It is constructed of roughcast cob and stone rubble, topped with a corrugated iron roof that has a gabled lower end on the right and a hipped higher end on the left. The farmhouse has a long, single-depth plan, likely originally consisting of three rooms and a cross or through passage, and it may have featured an open hall that is now floored.

The structure is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical arrangement of three windows. The windows are 19th-century two-light casements with glazing bars, while the right-hand ground floor room at the lower end features a sash window. There is a doorway to the right of the centre, which possibly leads to the former through or cross passage, and this is sheltered by a 19th or 20th-century glazed porch with shaped bargeboards. The farmhouse has a rendered axial stack backing onto the passage and a later stack at the lower gable end, with a lateral stack over the rear wall of the upper end. A projecting wing is located at the front of the higher end.

The adjoining shippon projects at right angles to the rear of the lower end and has a hipped roof. Inside, there are two cruck trusses, likely raised crucks, featuring trenched purlins and a diagonal ridge piece. Some evidence of smoke blackening can be found in the roof, and the ground floor room at the east end contains roughly hewn, closely spaced beams, some of which have been replaced.
