Watermill About 30 Metres South Of The Mill

This is an 18th-century watermill, with additions dating to around 1840 and later alterations in the 19th century. The mill is constructed of granite and slatestone rubble, with brick dressings, and has a slate roof with ridge tiles and gable ends. Originally a roughly square building, a second section of similar size was added around 1840, containing a second overshot waterwheel. A single-storey lean-to addition was later added to the front of the 1840 section. The mill is three stories high, comprising a spout floor, a stone floor, and a bin floor at the top. The original 18th-century section features a stable door with a brick segmental arch and a four-pane light, also with a brick segmental arch. Above this is a two-light casement window. To the left is the lean-to addition, with corrugated iron cladding on the first floor and 20th-century windows and a door at ground level. The rear of the mill is elevated, allowing the leat to run directly into the wheel pit. A cast iron wheel, along with an iron watershaft and wooden spokes, remains in the wheel pit of the 1840 section. Inside the original 18th-century mill, the pit wheel, wallower, and spur wheel are absent, though the stone nut remains. There is gearing for a sack hoist, and on the stone floor, a buhrstone with cast iron banding remains, part of one of the original two sets of stones. Wooden chutes are built into the bin floor, directing material down to the stones, and there is a pulley related to the sack hoist. No internal machinery remains in the 1840 addition.
