Description

Mill Cottage is a house that likely served as the miller's residence, dating from the early 19th century, with some alterations made in the 19th or 20th century. The building is constructed of painted stone rubble, with the top storey made of cob that is partly rendered. It features a slate roof with ridge tiles and gable ends, and has gable end stacks with brick shafts.

The layout consists of a two-room plan, with the entrance leading directly into the kitchen on the left and a parlour on the right, both heated by gable end stacks. The exterior is two storeys high and has a symmetrical two-window front. All windows are 16-pane sashes from the 19th century, and there is a central half-glazed door from the 20th century.

On the right side, there is a single-storey rubble lean-to with a corrugated asbestos roof and a front door. The left side features a large external stack with a curved oven at the base and a 4-pane light on the ground floor. At the rear, there are two small 20th-century lights on the ground floor, while the upper level has a small 4-pane light to the right, revealing the cob walling.

Inside, the kitchen has a fireplace with a replaced lintel and a cloam oven to the right with a cast iron door. The room features 19th-century beams and a straight stair on the right side, likely in its original location. The parlour on the right is divided by a plain panelled partition, probably from the 19th century, with similar panelled partitions separating both rooms on the first floor. The first floor also reveals straight saw-cut principal rafters from the 19th century.
