Description

The verandah and garden ornaments at the upper and lower zigzags in Edgcumbe Country Park date from the early 19th century. They include a verandah that was part of a summer house, which is no longer standing, and various garden ornaments such as a pedestal, likely once for a statue of Flora, a seat, a water trough, and retaining walls.

The verandah is constructed from sandstone rubble and measures about 7 metres long, with stone steps on each side and buttressing. It is believed that a wooden summer house once stood on top of the verandah. To the northeast of the verandah is a plain limestone pedestal.

The seat features a rear wall and side walls made of coursed sandstone rubble, topped with an elliptical arch. It originally had a wooden seat at the back and stands about 1 metre deep and 2 metres high. The granite water trough has walls at the back adorned with five square panels that feature carved quatrefoils, along with two recessed panels with ogee heads on each side. These panels are likely made from reused materials.

The retaining walls for the zigzag paths are also built from rubble. The Upper Zigzags were mentioned in 1836 and are depicted on a map from 1756.
