Description

Lady Damer's Seat is an ornamental seat built around 1777, located in Edgcumbe Country Park. It is constructed of sandstone on a brick foundation and has an elliptical shape, measuring about 5 metres long, with a sandstone facing. In front of the seat, there is a millstone that serves as a table.

The seat is dedicated to Mrs. Ann Damer, a relative of Horace Walpole, who visited Mount Edgcumbe in 1777. Following her visit, a small grove was established in the Lower Zigzags, which includes an acrostic poem composed by Lord Valletort, the son of the first earl. The poem highlights her qualities and contributions, stating:

"David ne'er touched the harp like thee,
Anson ne'er saw thy like at sea;
Mansfield's no eloquence like thine,
Edgcumbe who thinks thee all divine;
Records thy name by every line."

The Lower Zigzags were the first formal paths created along the hillside and cliffs near Mount Edgcumbe House.
