Description

Stables about 20 metres north of Heligan House

This is a complex of stables with attached coach house and further stable ranges. The main stables block dates from the early to mid-18th century, with later alterations carried out in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and few alterations thereafter. The buildings are constructed of slatestone rubble with granite dressings, partly slate-hung and partly rendered, with slate roofs featuring lead rolls to hips and ridges.

The main stable block follows a symmetrical U-plan, with short front wings to the right and left and a central rear wing. A coach house of late 18th-century date is attached at the right end, with its front facing the right side. A further range of circa early 19th-century date is attached to the rear right, forming an overall L-plan. A small coach house of circa late 19th-century date is attached at the right end of this range.

The main block is two storeys, symmetrical in arrangement with 2:3:2 bays, granite quoins and band course, and a central clock tower. The centre three bays have a central 6-panelled door with 12-pane overlight. To the right and left are 18th-century 30-pane sashes, some now partly boarded up, with three 18th-century 20-pane sashes at first floor. Above stands the clock tower, slate-hung with clock and cupola on panelled wooden posts with modillion cornice and ogee lead roof with finial and weathervane. The short front wings each have a doorway on the inner side, with the left wing containing two 30-pane sashes at ground floor and two 20-pane sashes at first floor. The right wing has a doorway with 15-pane overlight and a 30-pane sash at ground floor, with two 20-pane sashes at first floor. Not all windows remain. The left end has two small windows at ground floor and a loading door at first floor centre. The right end is blind.

At the rear, a central two-storey wing has a hipped roof with a brick stack to the rear and a door at the upper level. The attached coach house to the right end is two storeys, featuring two double plank doors with segmental stone arches, a band course, and two 18th-century 16-pane sashes with cambered brick arches at first floor. The coach house roof no longer remains.

The further L-plan range to the right, dating from circa early 19th century, is two storeys and includes a granite band course with the upper level rendered. The ground floor contains an entrance to a passage with segmental stone arch and keystone, a 20-pane fixed light with cambered stone arch and keystone, plank double doors with a 20th-century steel lintel, two 20-pane sashes with cambered stone arches and keystones, a single doorway with cambered stone arch and keystone, and two further 20-pane sashes with cambered stone arches and keystones. The first floor has eight 19th-century 16-pane sashes with cambered brick arches, though not all remain. The right end of the range features a hipped roof, blind wall with band course continued, and rendered upper level. An external granite stair leads to the upper level at the rear.

The small late 19th-century coach house attached at the right end has two storeys, with plank double doors at ground floor and a central blocked window above, with hipped roof. The rear is built into the bank, with the upper floor level constructed in brick and containing six doorways.

The interior is much dilapidated, though what remains of the stalls shows an arcaded front.
