Description
The Fountain is a covered fountain located in Falmouth, likely dating from the early 19th century in its current form. It features a large semi-spherical bowl set on a moulded "saucer" with an ashlar plinth. The fountain is topped by a slate-roofed shelter that is square in plan, supported by four unfluted granite columns. Each side of the shelter has a segmental granite monolith arch and a shallow granite-framed pediment with a recessed panel.
Historically, the original fountain is believed to have been relocated several times: first from an unknown location to the Old Market, built by Sir Peter Killigrew in 1632, then to the New Market House in 1729, and finally to its current position in 1812. The existing structure does not appear to contain any elements that predate the 19th century.
