Description

MAWGAN-IN-MENEAGE SW 62 SE 3/138 Rosevear Cottage and adjoining - cider house

II

House and adjoining cider house. Probably C17, remodelled and extended in the C18, deeds from 1750. Rubble and rendered cob walls, slate sills and wooden lintels. Grouted scantle slate roofs, brick chimneys over gable ends of steeper central part and half-hipped end of lower pitched part right with external rubble breast with tall brick shaft over at right hand end. Plan: probably originally a 3-room through passage plan with inner room left, hall, passage, and lower end room at far right. Extended at the rear with stair and pantry outshuts circa late C18 - early C19 and with a single storey cider house with slight rear projection, left, at left hand side. Ground slopes down towards right and rear. Used as 2 houses in the C19, now again 1 house. Two storeys. Overall 4 window east front with single storey 2-window symmetrical cider house front with central wide doorway, left. The house front is 2 houses each with a nearly symmetrical 2 window front with 1st floor windows closer spaced and central doorways. The original doorway, left of right hand doorway is now partly blocked, with a window. Panelled doors, partly glazed and circa late C19 horned sashes with 4, 6 or 12 panes. Interior has carpentry and joinery of circa early C19. There are 2 large hearths, the middle one blocked but the fireplace in the right hand room has oven beside the left hand jamb. The least altered and probably the oldest house in the hamlet of Rosevear.
