Description
The gate piers, walls surrounding the sundial, sundial, and walls flanking the paths to the south and west doorways of the Church of Saint Maugan date from the early 19th century. They are constructed from dressed granite, shale, and slate.
A pair of monolithic granite gate piers stand on either side of a wide lych gate entrance, which is flanked by granite-coped side walls. On the right side, the walls enclose a raised square terrace featuring a dressed granite sundial designed as a Tuscan column, inscribed with "I Worgan Fecit, Mawgan Parish 1695." There are two prominent steps leading to the main (south) gate and three smaller steps to the north of the sundial terrace. A cattle grid between the piers has been filled in. Beyond the gateway towards the south door of the church, there are low granite-coped rubble walls that serve as benches. Similar walls extend to connect with the west doorway, but these have slate copings or seats.
