Description
The barn located 30 metres to the west of Beardon is a Grade II listed structure with origins dating back to the early 18th century, likely partially rebuilt or extended in the mid-19th century. It features a combination of shippons, a threshing floor, a granary, and a hay loft above. Constructed from local stone rubble and cob, it retains a moulded stone plinth and is topped with rag slate roofs that have gable ends.
The barn has an overall rectangular plan, built into the side of a bank, resulting in a two-storey front and a single-storey rear, with the rear wall partly demolished in the 20th century. The ground floor includes shippon openings with the threshing floor positioned above, slightly to the right of the centre. The first floor accommodates the granary and hay loft, with an extension to the left added in the mid-19th century.
On the exterior, the two-storey front elevation features an earlier range on the right, where the entrance is set slightly forward and includes plank doors on both the ground and first floors. The openings have timber lintels, and there is an external stone rubble stair to the left. The later mid-19th century range to the left is made of stone rubble and has dressed stone segmental arches on the ground floor, rectangular window openings on the first floor, and a line of pigeon holes beneath the eaves.
Inside, the earlier range displays roughly chamfered large floor joists and roof trusses with flush apices that are halved, lap-jointed, and pegged.
