Description
The Market Building in Penzance, constructed in 1837 by architect Harris of Bristol, is a large two-storey structure made of granite ashlar. It features a lead-covered dome topped with an octagonal lantern. The drum of the dome is adorned with alternating twin Tuscan columns and semi-circular headed windows, along with an entablature that has a heavy cornice. The north and south elevations each have nine windows, with the ground floor featuring semi-circular heads and flat pilasters. Beneath the dome, there is a three-bay pediment. The east end showcases a tall Ionic tetrastyle facade, while the west end has a central pedimented entrance, with curved corner bays that are set back and flanked by giant engaged columns. This end also includes an entablature and a raised central pediment that features a clock.
