Sladdacott Farmhouse and Adjoining Cottage and Barn

Sladdacott Farmhouse, with adjoining cottage and barn, dates to the 17th century, with possible earlier elements and alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The farmhouse is built as a plastered cob range, alongside a more substantial hall range constructed of slatestone rubble with granite dressings. Both have slate roofs, with the hall range featuring a projecting rear lateral brick chimney, partially rebuilt in concrete blocks rendered to resemble roughcast. A smaller, single-depth range is attached at the lower end.

The hall range retains a sprocketted hipped roof to its right gable end and has two storeys and two windows. A two-storey gabled porch is situated at the front-right; its upper storey was rebuilt in the late 20th century, featuring a two-light timber gable window with glazing bars. The porch’s outer arch is moulded granite, with a four-centred arch under a square-headed hood mould, decorated with carved bull motifs within triangles, and sculpted ball motifs on the base of the door jambs. A six-light, granite, mullioned window is present on the ground floor, with three panes per light under a moulded hood. First-floor windows are two 3-light casements with glazing bars, under wooden lintels. The hall internally features a slate floor and closely-spaced axial floor beams with a cross beam, along with evidence of a staircase to the left of the fireplace. The fireplace has chamfered granite jambs with reverse straight cut stops.

The attached, two-storey, three-window cob range has a lower roofline, with a 20th-century entrance door glazed with small panes. Ground-floor windows include a 20th-century sash and a three-light casement with glazing bars. The first-floor windows are two-light casements with glazing bars, along with a smaller window opening above the door. One ground-floor room has sawn ceiling beams, a slate floor, and a large fireplace with a second flue for a clom oven. A now-blocked stack to the rear wall features a raised hearth, historically used as a cheese chimney. The roof of the cob range is supported by pegged principals.

Adjacent buildings, including a cottage and barn, contribute to the group value. The cottage was formerly a bank barn attached to the left gable end of the hall range, while the barn, with a loft above, is attached to the right gable end of the cob range and features a hipped corrugated iron roof and a projecting flight of rubble stone stairs. The cob range has replacement windows.
