Description
The Seaward is a house dating to around 1750, with later alterations. It is constructed of rubble, with a rendered side, a slate-hung front, and a slate roof featuring brick gable end stacks. The house has a double-depth plan, organised around a central entrance passage between two front rooms, a service room to the rear left, and a stair hall to the rear right.
The two-storey facade has three windows. The ground floor has a flat-roofed wooden porch, with a four-pane sash window to the right and left of the entrance. The first floor has a four-pane sash to the left and two twelve-pane sashes to the right, beneath a modillion cornice. A six-panelled and fielded door is located inside the porch.
The interior passage has fielded panelling to the left, with a six-panelled door, and dado panelling to the right. The front left room features a fireplace with an eared architrave, dentils on the moulded mantel, and a cupboard to the left with shaped shelves. It also contains a segmental head with a key and pilasters with fretwork carving to the head, and a fine three-tier cornice including dentillation. The front right room has panelled cupboards to the right of a 20th-century fireplace. A two-panelled door is located at the end of the passage. To the rear right is a dog-leg staircase with turned and knopped balusters, although the lower flight has been removed. The first floor has two-panelled doors. The room to the front right has a fireplace with an eared architrave, torus moulding, and dentils on the moulded mantel, with panelled shutters and soffits to the windows. This fireplace is similar to that at Lyndale Cottage, Fore Street, Kingsand. To the left, the front and rear rooms have been combined into one. The front room has a fireplace with an eared architrave and fretwork to the dentilled mantel, cupboards with two-panelled doors, and fretwork Greek key pattern to the cornice. The rear room has a fireplace with an eared architrave and a moulded mantel. The first floor landing has a moulded plaster cornice. The interior is described as fine, retaining most original features with little alteration. The details of the fireplaces are characteristic of Cawsand.
