Description

Spare Hill House is a farmhouse dating from around the mid-17th century, with extensions added in the 18th and early to mid-19th centuries. It is constructed of rendered and painted stone rubble and cob, with a rag slate roof featuring gable ends. A projecting stone rubble end stack is located on the left, with a brick shaft, while a brick axial stack was incorporated during the 18th-century extension to the right. Originally, the house followed a two-room and through-passage plan. The kitchen was likely to the left, heated by a large projecting stack, with the parlour to the right, heated by an end stack. Around the 18th century, narrow service rooms were added to the rear, maintaining the through passage. An additional one-room extension was built on the right-hand gable end in the early to mid-19th century; this was later incorporated into the adjoining property to the southwest. A lean-to outshot was added to the left-hand gable end, also in the early to mid-19th century. The exterior exhibits a regular three-by-one window front. The circa 17th-century symmetrical range was probably remodelled in the late 18th century, retaining late 18th-century sash windows. The central door is from the 19th century and has an ornate, glazed porch with various glazing bar patterns. There are 20-pane sashes to the right and left, each with incised keyblocks above. The first floor has two 20-pane sashes flanking a central 16-pane sash. The right-hand extension has a 20th-century door on the ground floor and a four-pane sash above. Inside, 19th-century timber screens flank the through passage, which retains a slate flag floor. The interior is not completely accessible.
