Description
The garden terrace walls, steps, and pergola located immediately southwest of Heyle were built around 1914-1919. Although the architect is not known, original drawings are reportedly held by the owner. The house and garden were designed for Mr. and Miss Cooper, who were siblings. The structure features shale rubble walls topped with slate, slate treads for the steps, and granite posts for the pergola.
The garden terraces are positioned to the west of the house, at the left end of the main range. The top terrace includes a large rectangular lawn, with a path below that features a pergola made of roughly hewn granite monolith posts on the outer side and slate piers on the inner side. The granite posts are set on a retaining wall that leads down to a narrow terrace, which has a grass path. At the eastern end of this path, there is a flight of steps with integrated curved seats on either side, providing access to the terrace surrounding the house. At the western end of the path, a pair of squat circular piers leads to another flight of steps that connect all the terraces. At the bottom of these steps, the flanking walls curve out into squat terminal piers topped with granite bosses. On the left side of the lower terrace, a tall boundary wall encloses a small rectangular pond or well. The terraces in front of the house are formed by earth banks without any revetments.
