Description

Great Fursnewth Farmhouse is a mid-18th century farmhouse, with subsequent alterations. It is constructed of stone rubble, with slate hanging to the front and left side, and has a slurried slate roof with ridge tiles and gable ends. Brick chimney shafts rise from gable stacks. The farmhouse is arranged with a double-depth plan, featuring a central entrance and principal rooms to the front left and right, each with its own gable end stack. A stair hall tower occupies the centre of the rear, and a detached, unheated dairy is situated to the rear right. A one-room-plan rear wing extends to the rear left, containing the kitchen, which is also heated by a gable end stack.

The two-storey front facade has a symmetrical arrangement of three windows, all with 19th century 16-pane sashes. A central 6-panelled fielded door is topped by a fanlight with decorative glazing bars, fluted pilasters, a cornice, and a panelled soffit. A dentil cornice runs along the eaves. A 12-pane light is visible in the attic on the left side. The two-storey rear wing to the left also has slate hanging and includes 20-pane sashes at ground and first floor, alongside a 20th-century window at first floor level. A later, unheated rubble lean-to adjoins the left side, extending to one storey with a loft. The rear of this wing showcases granite quoins, and the lean-to has a 20th-century window (formerly a door) and a 4-pane light to the loft. The inner side of the wing features a door and 16-pane sash window, with a 20-pane sash window at first floor level. On the right side of the main house, a 19th-century door with a glazed panel provides access to the dairy, alongside a 16-pane sash window at first floor. The rear of the main range features a central stair tower with a hipped roof and a round-headed stair light, which is a 16-pane sash with radial glazing bars. A panelled and glazed door is positioned to the right, and a 2-light casement with a cambered head is to the left.

The interior entrance hall features a plaster cornice. The rooms to the front left have a fireplace with a dressed stone cambered arch, flanked by round-arched stone cupboards; window shutters and a plaster cornice with leaf and fruit motifs are also present. A 6-panelled door is also present. The room to the front right similarly features a 6-panelled door, cupboards to either side of the fireplace, which is a 20th-century reconstruction, and a plaster cornice with egg and dart mouldings and fruit. The stair hall contains a plain dog-leg staircase with stick balusters and a closed string, flanked by pilasters, and 6-panelled doors at first floor level. The dairy, to the rear right, features a slate floor and slate tables and was partitioned in the 19th century. The kitchen in the rear wing has a gable end fireplace with a segmental stone arch and keystone, a cloam oven with a cast iron door to the rear left, and a round-arched stone cupboard to the right.
