Description
Ye Old Steam Packet is an early 19th-century hotel with an attached stable. It is constructed of stone rubble, rendered and lined out, with a slate roof featuring ridge tiles, gable ends and deep eaves. Gable end stacks have rendered shafts. The stable is built of painted rubble with a slate roof.
The hotel has a double-depth plan with a central entrance and principal rooms to either side, each with a gable end stack for heating. Rear service rooms are also present. The stable is situated to the right, set back and built into the bank at the rear.
The hotel’s front elevation is three storeys high and symmetrical, featuring three windows. The ground floor has a 20th-century door centrally positioned, flanked by two 19th-century plate-glass sashes. The first floor has two 19th-century eight-pane sashes with margin glazing, and a central French window with margin glazing and a blind box, all topped by a balcony with cast iron railings and a moulded fascia board. Three smaller eight-pane sashes with margin glazing occupy the second floor.
The stable is two storeys high with four bays, and includes wide sliding double doors, a single door with strap hinges, and a 20th-century two-light casement with a cambered brick arch. The first floor of the stable has four 19th-century 12-pane sashes with cambered brick arches, the second from the right being blind.
The interior of the hotel has not been inspected.
