Description
The Tidal Mill is a rare surviving structure dating back to 1613, as indicated by the gable end doorway on the west side. The building underwent remodeling in the mid-19th century, which included raising the eaves level and adding a new roof. It stands two storeys above the sluices, constructed from rubble with a slate roof, which was originally thatched. The west gable end is cement-rendered. There are three sluice rises, with the ground floor featuring a window and a door, while the first floor has three windows, one of which includes reused granite dressing from an earlier opening. The west door has a chamfered head with pyramidal stops surrounding it, and it bears an inscription that reads "FBRB AB" and "1613." Inside, the gable end of the early 17th-century building to the east is clearly visible, with one rise retained. On the north side, there are three windows, two of which have granite lintels that were formerly for mullion windows, and they are segment-headed. In front of the mill is a small quay above the sluices, and to the east is the site of the mill-pond sluice. To the north-west is the mill house. Documentary evidence shows that this mill has existed since the 14th century.
