Description
The building comprises a mill with a mill weir, dating to the 17th century with earlier origins. It is constructed of stone rubble, timber-frame, and brick, with a re-roofed 19th-century plain tile roof. The mill has an L-shaped plan. It is two floors and an attic, accessed by wooden steps to the first floor. A 20th-century plank door is set under a concrete lintel. To the left, openings are found under oak lintels, and a 19th-century leaded light is set in a pegged oak frame. Below is a V-shaped cut-water and grille. 18th-century brickwork is visible to the timber-framed gable, incorporating a two-light mullion window. A wing to the left features a 20th-century two-light mullion leaded light, and a blocked doorway is visible to the left. The left returned side exhibits deep eaves with sawn purlins over massive earlier purlins. The rear elevation includes a narrow pentice roof over the tail-race, and a blocked opening under a timber lintel, with a 20th-century mullion light above. Two hipped gable dormers with six-light mullion and transom windows, featuring leaded lights and casements, are on the left returned side of the main block. The rear also displays an 18th-century gable with leaded lights set in timber framing with brick infill, a corner buttress, tail-races under stone lintels, and a two-light mullion window in an altered opening under a brick segmental arch. The right returned side features stone steps to a basement containing a 19th-century plank door and light, set in an altered opening under a stop-chamfered oak lintel and brick segmental arch. To the left of this is a two-light mullion, and to the right, steps lead to a 19th-century plank door under a brick segmental arch. Internally, one early 19th-century wheel and shaft remain, along with some sluice controls. The weir is of medieval origin, V-shaped, and serves Ludford and Hockey’s mills. It is constructed of stone rubble with vertical coursing.
