Description
The gate piers and courtyard wall adjoining Truthall and Truthall House date from the 17th century. They are constructed from granite ashlar, featuring a dressed granite plinth and copings, with rubble at the rear. The design includes two square gate piers with an ashlar-fronted wall on either side, creating a roughly rectangular courtyard that aligns closely with the entrance doorway of the 1642 range of Truthall. The courtyard is cobbled and slopes away from the gateway, with a central path made of dressed granite flags formed from rounded stones, leading to a granite kerb that is perpendicular to the doorway of the through passage of Truthall. The courtyard wall appears to be integral with the rear corner of Truthall House, while the right-hand wall connects to the corner of Truthall at the higher end of the hall, featuring a straight joint. Both walls have a plinth and round-top copings, while the gate piers boast moulded plinths, plain ashlar shafts that rise above the walls, and moulded cornices topped with ramped pyramidal caps and ball finials. These impressive walls and gate piers are well-preserved and serve as a prominent feature, illustrating the relationship between the house and the courtyard, which aids in understanding the development of the house's layout.
