Description

ST GERMANS CHURCH STREET, (north side), SX 35 NE St Germans 5/93 Railings, gateway and wall attached to south east of the Gardener's Cottage GV II

Railings, gateway and wall. Mid C19, incorporating C17 gateway. Cast iron railings on granite plinth. Granite gateway. Slatestone rubble walls. The railings have decorative finials to the top rail, and a circle pattern along the mid rail, hooped stanchions, set on granite plinth. About 30 metres long. Central recess in the railing range for a pump and granite trough. Attached to the east, a square stone pier with pyramidal cap, about 4 metres high. Set next to this, a 4-centred arched granite gateway, hollow-chamfered with recessed spandrels and hood mould. The gateway is set in a rubble wall, and has a C20 wrought iron gate. The wall is ramped down beyond the gateway, with slatestone coping, about 2 metres high and extending about another 80 metres, forming part of the boundary of Port Eliot along Old Quay Lane.
