Description
The Stoke Climsland War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was erected after the First World War and altered after the Second World War. It is made of granite and is situated on the site of the Manorial pound, now a raised gravelled area surrounded by a low granite wall, in the center of Stoke Climsland, to the north-west of the parish church, which is a Grade II* listed building.
The memorial features a two-step square base topped with a cube plinth that has a moulded cornice. Above this is another plinth and a square-section tapering shaft that culminates in a simple Celtic cross head. The shaft's plinth is inscribed in black lettering with the words: "SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF / THE FOLLOWING OFFICERS NCOS & MEN / WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918." The names of the soldiers who died in the First World War are listed on the principal face of the square plinth below, followed by the inscription: "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS, THAT A MAN / LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS." Additionally, the names of 10 men who fell in the Second World War are inscribed under the dates 1939-1945 on a granite tablet shaped like an open book at the base of the memorial.
