Description

This is a late 16th-century farmhouse, subsequently extended in the 18th century, and with later additions and alterations. The building is constructed of slate-stone, with slate and asbestos slate roofing. Originally a two-unit plan, it was extended to the left in the 18th century. The farmhouse is two storeys high. The first floor has three late 20th-century plastic casement windows, those in the centre and to the right positioned directly below the eaves; similar casements are located immediately below them on the ground floor, with a contemporary bow window on the right. A small wood casement window lights the staircase to the right of a lean-to porch located immediately to the right of centre; this porch has a 19th-century casement window with Gothic glazing. An external end stack is positioned on the left side, and two ridge stacks are visible to the right, immediately to the right of the lean-to porch, where the roof pitch changes. A lean-to extension is situated at the rear, centrally located and extended to the left; it may have formerly continued to the right. The right-hand ground-floor room features moulded cross beams with ring beams and concealed joists. An inglenook fireplace has a large chamfered granite lintel and jambs, along with a cloam oven. A spiral staircase, with 20th-century slate paving to the treads, leads to a pegged round-headed wooden doorway, granting access to a first-floor room to the right. This room has a roughly central collar truss with chamfered principal rafters, though the apex was not visible during a resurvey in December 1987. A ground-floor room between the ridge stacks has chamfered cross beams, some of which are boxed in.
