2 Pairs Of Gate Piers And Wall Adjoining Piers At South Side Of Carriageway To South Of Tonacombe Manor

There are two pairs of gate piers and a garden wall located on the south side of the carriageway, south of Tonacombe Manor. The wall was likely rebuilt in the 18th century but may have earlier origins, while the gate piers date from the 18th century. The garden wall is made of stone rubble and has a coping, while the gate piers are constructed from ashlar. Each pair of gate piers is square in section and positioned at the west and east ends of the carriageway, known as "the street," just south of Tonacombe Manor. The gate piers rest on moulded plinths and feature moulded cornices, with pilasters that end in moulded carved consoles on the inner sides. The eastern gate piers are topped with the Waddon falcon. It is suggested that these gate piers may have originally come from Stowe, the Grenville house in Kilkhampton, which was dismantled around 1739.
