Description
The churchyard walls and adjoining war memorial at St Buryan date from the 18th century, with parts rebuilt in the 20th century using original stones. The walls are constructed of both granite ashlar and granite rubble, featuring shaped dressed granite copings. They enclose an irregularly shaped churchyard and include two gateways: one to the south and another to the east, which has steps leading up between the returned churchyard walls.
The war memorial is integrated into the churchyard wall south of the church and faces the road. It is made of granite ashlar and dressed granite, featuring a large ogee-headed arched niche that contains a pierced wheel-headed cross with a crucifixion above an inscribed plinth, which stands on a pedestal resembling a tabernacle. The site was partially excavated in 1985, revealing three earlier walls beneath, the oldest of which is likely the enclosure wall of a late Iron Age settlement.
