Mill Approximately 25 Metres North East of Carthew Farmhouse

This is a mill, likely used for grinding grain and also originally or later for sawing timber, built in 1827. It was constructed for S E Martyn, as evidenced by a datestone and initials. The mill is located approximately 25 metres north-east of Carthew Farmhouse. The structure is built of granite rubble with Pentewan stone dressings and has a bitumen grouted rag slate roof. It follows an L-shaped plan, built into the bank and adjoins a later bank barn. A deep wheel pit and water wheel are present on the rear elevation.

The front of the left-hand section has a central doorway and a loading/winnowing doorway above, flanked by the datestone and initials. A window is located to the left, with ground-floor doorways to the far left and right. The right-hand front features flat arches over a doorway on the far left and another towards the left, while other openings are spanned by segmental arches. These include a wide loading doorway above the doorway second from the left, a wide ground-floor doorway towards the right, and a narrow doorway on the far right. The rear of the left-hand section has a window on the left and a loading/winnowing doorway opposite the front first-floor doorway. Three small low openings on the left are remnants of belt drives, one of which has been cut through later, and a low opening on the right is spanned by a re-used, 17-segmental granite arch stone. The water wheel elevation has a central loading/winnowing doorway and a large, unrestored water wheel on the right. The cast-iron and wooden wheel appears to have been breast shot, with water landing near the top. Windows have simple vertical glazing bars, and ledged doors are present.

The interior retains the original roof structure, including collar trusses and drive wheels from its former use as a sawmill. An attached high rubble wall serves as a leat launder and defines the northern boundary of the farmyard, with Carthew Farmhouse to the south and the bank barn adjoining the west gable. The building’s original design facilitated dual use as both a grist and saw mill, a rare configuration, and the survival of the water wheel further enhances its significance.
