Description
The calciner located immediately north of The Stamps House at Wheal Coates Mine is a disused arsenic calciner dating from the mid to late 19th century. It is constructed from slate killas rubble with timber lintels and is currently roofless, with the gable ends still standing.
The building has a rectangular plan consisting of two rooms on two levels, with the higher side room containing a complex of former furnaces. The exterior is single-storey, and the walls remain at their original height, including the three gable ends. The south (front) wall features a window opening on the left, two furnace doorways low down on the right, and a doorway located midway above. The rear wall has two furnace doorways low down on the left and a doorway on the right. The left-hand gable end includes a window on the left, while the right-hand gable end has a doorway towards the left.
Inside, the structure retains much of its original use, including four unroofed furnace chambers in the right-hand room. Additionally, there is a niche in the left-hand wall of the other room.
