Limekiln Cottage and Limekiln Adjoining to Left

Limekiln Cottage and the adjoining limekiln, located in Morval, is an end cottage in a terrace of three, dating from the late 17th century with 19th-century alterations. The cottage features a stone rubble exterior that is painted and rendered on the front elevation, topped with a steeply pitched asbestos slate roof that has gable ends and double gabled dormers at the front. A rendered brick chimney stack is located at the rear on the left side.

The cottage has a two-room layout with a through passage, and a narrow staircase slightly projecting to the left of the passage. The larger room on the left is heated by the rear lateral chimney stack. The limekiln, added to the rear of the left gable end, has had its entrance altered with a 20th-century porch added to the front of the limekiln at the gable end.

The cottage is two storeys high with an asymmetrical two-window front. On the ground floor, there are two 19th-century two-light casements with small glazing bars and chamfered timber lintels with straight cut stops, flanking a part-glazed 20th-century door located to the right of centre. Above, there are two 19th-century gabled half-dormers featuring triangular-headed two-light casements with glazing bars. The left-hand gable end has a 20th-century rendered porch with a plank door, a four-pane casement, and a slate lean-to roof.

Inside, the cottage retains original chamfered ceiling beams with straight cut stops, as well as roof timbers with chamfered principals and chamfered collars that are partly halved, lapped, and pegged onto the face of the principals. The limekiln, dating from the late 18th or early 19th century, is constructed of stone rubble and features a dressed stone arch opening to the kiln on the right-hand side, facing the cottage. It is built into the side of a bank to facilitate top loading.
