Description

This limekiln, located 40 meters southeast of the Old Post Office in Morval, is possibly from the 18th century. It is constructed of stone rubble and features round arched dressed stone openings with deeply splayed reveals. The structure is rectangular in plan and likely contains two cylindrical chambers inside. There are openings on both the right and left sides, with an additional half round arch at the front leading to a third grate served by the right-hand chamber. The limekiln has a flat top and is built into the side of a steep slope, which facilitates top loading, with road access from the left. At the time of inspection, the site was heavily overgrown.

The limekiln is situated approximately 60 meters east of the East Looe River and the Liskeard and Union Canal, which was authorized in 1825 to support agricultural work by linking Liskeard with the tidal waters at Looe. Limestone was transported by barge and burned at the four limekilns in Sandplace, including this one. The canal was later replaced by the Liskeard and Caradon Railway, which opened in 1846. Records indicate that John Francis Buller of Morval erected limekilns at Sandplace in 1743 and again in 1766-67. Farm accounts show that the lands in Morval received significant lime dressing to reduce soil acidity, making it suitable for growing wheat and barley. An annual lease from 1777 mandated that each acre of land be treated with 80 horse loads of good salt, sea sand, or four 16-gallon bushels of lime.
