Row Of 3 Cottages And Wash-House Approximately 150 Metres To West Of Penheale Manor

This is a row of three estate workers' cottages and a wash-house, located approximately 150 meters to the west of Penheale Manor. Built in the early 20th century, these buildings were designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens for Captain N.R. Colville. They are constructed of stone rubble with dressed stone quoins and feature slate roofs with deep overhanging eaves and hipped ends. The cottages are arranged in a row, each with a two-room plan heated by axial stacks.

The exterior is two storeys high and has an almost symmetrical front elevation with a 2:3:2 arrangement of windows. The windows are 2 and 3-light casements with glazing bars. The central cottage's front wall is set back, allowing the roof to continue unbroken across this recess, creating especially deep eaves. The central cottage has an entrance on the right with granite lintels and jambs, featuring two panelled doors that are set back. It has two 3-light casements in the center and to the right, with a central 2-light casement flanked by two 3-light casements on the first floor. The cottages on either side are mirror images of each other, each with granite lintels and jambs at their entrances, a 4-light casement on the ground floor, and 2 and 3-light casements on the first floor.

On the rear elevation, the closely set first-floor windows create a glazed band directly below the overhanging eaves. In front of the cottages is a communal wash-house, also built of stone rubble with dressed quoins, featuring a slate roof with hipped ends and a stone rubble and dressed stone lateral stack. This single-storey wash-house has a panelled door on the left side. Both the wash-house and the row of cottages were built before the Lutyens extension to Penheale Manor.
