Description
The stables, built in 1620 for Sir John Specott, are constructed from snecked stone and feature a moulded plinth and string courses. The steeply pitched slate roof has hipped ends, and there are stone rubble axial and rear lateral stacks. The building has a rectangular plan that includes stables with a loft and accommodation for stable hands above. There are garages in a shallow wing to the rear left and a farmhouse in a shallow wing to the rear right.
The stables are two storeys high and have a symmetrical front with nine bays, featuring a moulded plinth and a continuous moulded string. The central entrance was remodelled in 1676 by R. Edwards and includes a rounded granite arch with a hood mould and a segmental arched pediment formed by raising the string course. On either side of the entrance are three granite mullion and transom window openings, with low granite rounded arched openings in the third and seventh bays, each with hood moulds and triangular pediments above. The first floor has a central loft opening, also remodelled in 1676, which is slightly raised above the eaves level and features a rounded granite arch, hood mould, and triangular pediment. There are four ventilation slits on either side.
The rear elevation includes garage doors to the rear left and 17th-century mullion and transom windows that light the farmhouse in the wing to the rear right. The interior is not accessible, but the owner states that there are complete stalls and loose boxes, likely from the 18th century.
