Description

Penheale Barton is a farmhouse built in 1835 for Henry Addington Simcoe. It features stone rubble construction with granite dressings and a moulded plinth, while the left side is slate hung. The roof is slate with gable ends and deep overhanging eaves, topped with crested ridge tiles. The building has stone rubble axial and end stacks with moulded caps.

The layout consists of a front range with three rooms and a through passage. The lower end on the right is heated by an end stack, the hall is heated by an axial stack backing onto the passage, and the inner room to the left is heated by another end stack. There are probably contemporary rear wings of one room plan on the rear right and left, along with a 20th-century service outshut added to the back of the passage. Attached to the higher left side is a circa early to mid-19th century outbuilding, likely originally a shippon or stable with a loft above, which has been partly incorporated into the house. The farmhouse's style is influenced by early 17th-century architecture.

The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical four-window front and an entrance to the right of centre. It features a 4-centred chamfered granite arch with a datestone and the arms of the Simcoe family above, along with a 19th-century plank door. To the left, there are two 3-light mullion windows, and one to the right. The first floor has four 2-light mullion windows above the ground floor openings. The lower range adjoining to the left was originally a shippon or stable with a loft above. The rear elevation includes dressed stone segmental arches, two plank doors flanking a central 3-light casement, and two 2-light casements on the first floor. The interior contains 19th and 20th-century joinery and carpentry details.
