Description

West Rose Farmhouse and garden wall date from around the early 17th century, with alterations and extensions likely occurring in the late 19th century. The farmhouse is constructed of stone rubble and granite, with ashlar granite dressings. The front elevation is rendered, while the roof is covered with rag slate, featuring gable ends and granite parapet coping with scrolled kneelers. Projecting stone rubble end stacks have ashlar granite shafts and moulded granite caps.

The original layout is unclear. Evidence of reused dressed granite suggests the house may have been larger and more prestigious originally, with detailing comparable to Mansion House, Blisland and Lavethan, Blisland. It follows a two-room plan with a through passage, originally heated by gable end stacks. A 19th-century porch fronts the passage and a staircase projection adjoins the porch, situated to the rear of the right-hand room. A late 19th-century extension was added to the rear of the left-hand room. Curtain walls partially obscure single-story service wings, each of a one-room plan.

The symmetrical three-window front was probably remodelled in the early 19th century, with windows replaced in the late 20th century. A central 20th-century glazed door is flanked by two late 20th-century bow windows. Above, there are three centre-hung casement windows within two-centred arched openings. The rear elevation includes a 19th-century porch with a two-centred archway to the door.

The ground floor partitions have been removed. The 19th-century staircase likely replaced an earlier turreted staircase in the projection to the rear of the right-hand room.

A stone rubble and granite garden wall with granite coping surrounds a large garden to the rear of West Rose Farmhouse.
